Reported £25m price tag lays bare Liverpool's Luis Alberto error

A general view outside The Kop at Anfield is seen prior to the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Burnley FC at Anfield on March 10, 2019 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Premier League powerhouses Liverpool sold Luis Alberto for just £4m but he has shone in Serie A with Lazio since then.

Remember Luis Alberto, Liverpool fans? You would be forgiven for saying no.

After all, the Spanish midfielder didn’t exactly make a lasting impression in his blink-and-you-miss it spell at Anfield. Brendan Rodgers was in the Liverpool dugout when a little known Alberto arrived in the summer of 2013 from Sevilla but, just 12 appearances later, he was gone as quickly as he’d arrived.

Liverpool sold Alberto to Lazio for a fee of around £4 million (BBC), taking a £2 million loss on a player they were very quick to give up on. Perhaps too quick.

Because since arriving in the Italian capital, via an excellent loan spell at Deportivo La Coruna, Alberto has gone from Anfield flop to a star in his own right at the Stadio Olimpico – even earning a coveted Spain cap in 2017.

He tallied 11 goals and 14 assists in Serie A last season as Lazio narrowly missed out on the Champions League and, while his form has dipped a bit of late, it still feels as if Liverpool really dropped the ball.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Alberto’s price tag has rocketed to £25 million in just three years amid interest from his former club Sevilla.

Now, Suso is often seen as Liverpool’s Italian-based ‘one that got away’. But maybe Alberto was the bigger mistake.
