Few had heard of the diminutive play-maker before he joined Aston Villa from Valencia in January 2015 for a fee of £3.2 million, according to the BBC.
But Gil quickly made his mark in claret and blue, scoring with a stunning, swerving shot on his first start for the club against Bournemouth in the FA Cup.
Gil quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite with his skill, intelligence and eye for a spectacular goal earning the midfielder plenty of admirers.
But, with consistency proving elusive, Gil fell down the pecking order with Villa in almost constant transition.
After a brief and forgettable spell back in Spain with Deportivo la Coruna, which ended in relegation, the 26-year-old was offered a fresh start by New England Revolution.
And it is fair to say Gil is thriving in a new environment. He has scored three goals in three games already for the MLS outfit with some pundits even claiming that he could be one of the best signings in New England’s history.
Jack Grealish, who is still playing in Villa colours, clearly thinks the gifted play-maker has a lot left to offer, writing on Instagram: ‘Gilly come back to Villa’.
