Dave Edwards has hailed the performance of Tyler Roberts after the Leeds United forward impressed in Wales’ 1-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night, while speaking to Sky Sports (20 March, 8:00pm).
Ryan Giggs shuffled his pack as Wales welcomed the Caribbean outfit to the Racecourse Ground, handing Rotherham United’s Will Vaulks his international debut while the likes of Ryan Hedges, George Thomas and Lee Evans were also given a chance to impress.
Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn was the hero, scoring the only goal of the game in the dying seconds. But former Wales veteran Edwards was keen to pay tribute to the lively Roberts after the game.
The former West Brom youngster was a constant menace, particularly when floating out to the right, and could have scored twice on the night.
“He is a terrific footballer. I first remember training with Tyler Roberts when he came along with Ethan Ampadu to the preliminary camp before Euro 2016. He was obviously very young then and you could see the quality he had,” said Shrewsbury midfielder Edwards, who won 43 caps for his country.
“I think he works really well in between the lines, like a No 10, so he can naturally play that wide position and he’ll make good runs inside all night.
“I think that’s what Ryan Giggs is looking for.”
Roberts has been in impressive form for Leeds in recent weeks, justifying his £4 million price-tag (Mail) and adapting impressively to an attacking midfield role despite spending much of his younger days as an out-and-out striker.
Working with Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road has clearly been good for him.
