Everton’s Jordan Pickford recently helped his side secure a much-needed win over Chelsea.

Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips has claimed that it wouldn’t ‘surprise’ him if Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford goes on the earn ‘the most caps’ for England.

At this moment in time, Three Lions great, Peter Shilton holds that record with 125 caps for his country [Goal]. Wayne Rooney is the most capped outfield player with 119 appearances.

Pickford has produced a number of indifferent performances of late which has resulted in supporters and pundits questioning his position as England’s main man between the sticks.

Speaking to the Debate Show on Sky Sports Premier League (19/03/2019 at 10:25 pm), Phillips defended Pickford’s recent form.

“His success has come so quick for him,” Phillips told Sky Sports News. “Has he really had time to sit down? He’s come from the World Cup straight into the Premier League.

“Let’s face it, Everton haven’t been fantastic this season. Collectively, a lot has happened to him. He is going to have games, he is under pressure and naturally a young kid is going to make mistakes.

“He’s an outstanding goalkeeper, for me, you don’t drop him and it wouldn’t surprise me if this kid goes on to get the most caps for England.”

There is no doubt that goalkeepers tend to boost their appearances record a lot more because their position does not change as much as the outfield players.

Before the Three Lions reached the semi-final of last summers World Cup in Russia, Southgate opted to drop Joe Hart and hand Pickford the main spot in the team.

He produced the goods for his side in Russia, but he has come under criticism for his mistakes against Liverpool and Newcastle this term.

Nonetheless, Pickford has earned 15 caps for his country thus far [transfermarkt] and he will be looking to add to that tally in years to come.
