Jed Steer looks to be staying at Aston Villa for another year.
Aston Villa are in fine form right now, winning four games in a row to catapult themselves into the Championship play-off places.
Defeating Derby County, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough whilst conceding just one goal in the process as Dean Smith’s side begin to click.
Jack Grealish’s return from injury has been a key factor, but so has goalkeeper Jed Steer, who has impressed between the sticks.
The 26-year-old has been featuring regularly since the middle of February, earning a rare run in the side having spent the first half of the season on loan at Charlton Athletic.
Steer has come in for Lovre Kalinic, and whilst he hasn’t had tons of work thanks to the strong defence in front of him, he’s been solid in the Villa goal.
The Express and Star now report that Steer will be signing a new one-year extension at Villa Park, preventing him from being out of contract this summer.
Steer has a chance to nail down a first-team spot, but that has left fans to question the big-money January signing of Lovre Kalinic given that he’s already been benched in favour of Steer.
Fans have taken to Twitter to voice their opinions, with some feeling that the signing of Kalinic was ‘daft’ and ultimately not worth the wait, as Villa seemingly had a solid goalkeeper on their books already.
Others think that Kalinic will still prove to be the first-choice goalkeeper moving forward, but the decision to start and keep Steer means some are worried that Villa have made a mistake by signing the Croatian just two months ago.
Well, good to know the long wait for Kalinic’s arrival was so worth it. https://t.co/sucgODVTP4— Freddie Shires (@fshires) March 18, 2019
I think in the long run it’ll prove to be Kalinic so I voted for him. However right now Steer has earned his spot and I’m so pleased he’s got his extension.— Adz (@AdzW90) March 18, 2019
If we don’t go up, next year Kalinić’s wages will be over 20% of our TV money. Can we really justify that on a backup keeper?— Joe Szwaba (@JoeSzwaba) March 18, 2019
Absolutely zero need to go overseas for keepers when we produce so many brilliant ones from grassroots. Fully deserved @JedSteer— Omar Ahmad (@OmarHolte) March 19, 2019
Nyland and Kalinic were daft signings.@JBransgrove @DBricknell10 @ryanfc1995
Great news, I still believe Kalinic is a good signing but he seems to need time and we don’t have that and Jed has stepped in and got the job done, well done— Michael Wilkins (@MichaelW_1874) March 19, 2019
Hasn’t had much to do, good defence in front of him, kalinic number 1 in the long run.— Wayne Turner (@turner295) March 19, 2019
I’m mean Steer hasn’t had to make a save since he got in the team. But he’s done the simple things well…unlike the other 2 keepers. #avfc— Oakley Doakley (@Gazoaks) March 18, 2019
