The summer transfer window is still a couple of months way, but that hasn't stopped speculation linking West Ham United with new signings.
Intriguingly, reports from La Segunda in Spain over the weekend suggested that West Ham made a €10million (£8.5million) bid for Alaves defender Guillermo Maripan in January, which was rejected.
It's noted that West Ham are likely to come back in with a new move for the centre back, who is wanted by fellow Chilean Pellegrini in a bid to boost his defence.
Yet a move for the 6ft 4in 24-year-old would lead to major questions being asked, given that Pellegrini already has centre backs Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid at his disposal.
By moving for Maripan, surely one of them is primed for a summer exit. Maripan's exploits in Spain mean he is unlikely to move unless it's for first-team football, so who could be leaving?
Balbuena has impressed this season and appears settled at West Ham, whilst the same goes for Diop, though he may attract some big bids from major clubs in Europe after an impressive season.
Reid is only just coming back from injury, so it's unlikely a club would move for him. That makes the clear favourite Ogbonna, especially as the Daily Mirror (22/12; page 68) reported that Bologna offered £9million to take him back to Italy.
At almost 31, this may be the perfect time for West Ham to cash in on Ogbonna, with interest seemingly coming from Italy. Offloading him and reinvesting in Maripan appears to be a smart move, unless there's a shock on the cards and it's another defender potentially leaving.
