Hooper has not appeared for Sheffield Wednesday’s first team in 16 months.

Gary Hooper was among the scorers as Sheffield Wednesday beat Scunthorpe United 5-1 in a friendly on Tuesday afternoon, Lee Bullen has revealed.

Hooper last appeared for Wednesday’s first team on Boxing Day 2017 and made his long-awaited comeback for the Owls’ Under-23s last week.

But with Neil Thompson’s side not scheduled to play until Monday, a behind-closed-doors game was arranged for this week.

And Sheffield Wednesday ended up comfortable winners, with Daniel Pudil, George Boyd (two) and Alex Hunt also on target, according to Bullen, the Owls’ first-team coach.

It is unclear which other players featured in the friendly, although Sam Winnall was down to feature, his manager, Steve Bruce, said last week.

Hooper, whose Wednesday contract expires this summer, has scored or assisted 41 goals in 83 games since his move to Hillsborough three-and-a-half-years ago..

The 31-year-old spent two seasons at Scunthorpe earlier in his career.

Can Hooper make the difference in Sheffield Wednesday’s push for a play-off place?
