The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder is enjoying his most productive ever season in professional football.
Bannan was heavily involved as Wednesday beat Blackburn 4-2 on Saturday, continuing the run of form that led to his international recall after 18 months.
But Scotland announced the midfielder's release less than 24 hours later, without an explanation.

Sheffield Wednesday are already without Joost van Aken, Achraf Lazaar, Matt Penney, Josh Onomah, Kieran Lee, Fernando Forestieri, Lucas Joao and Gary Hooper due to injury, and have added Sam Hutchinson and Steven Fletcher to their list of absentees since Blackburn.
This is what those of an Owls persuasion are saying on Twitter...
@domhowson Dom, do you anything why Bannan has pulled out of the Scotland squad? I know he cramped up on Saturday but is he injured for a length of time? Cheers.— OR_1992 (@OR19922) 18 March 2019
Bannan withdraws from Scotland squad for upcoming friendlies. Not injured is he?— Shirecliffe Owl (@Blaggy1867) 17 March 2019
Bannan was suffering with cramp at the end of the match yesterday so I guess that's why. Plus Bruce is worried about number of injuries with Hutch going off as well so probably didn't want to risk him.— Kat (@kmowl44) 17 March 2019
I reckon it will be precautionary fingers crossed— Katie Louise (@katie_kirk30) 17 March 2019
Bannan pulling out of Scotland squad Cos he’s fully focused on play offs n has donated his place in line up to fleck pass it on— LW (@liamward_6) 17 March 2019
I see Bannan is out of the Scotland squad. Very very wise move. Scotland don’t treat him very well anyway and keeps him fresh for us. Think last squad he got overlooked for Fleck, don’t blame him for making sure he’s 100% for #swfc— RocketOwl (@RocketOwl1986) 17 March 2019
Bannan is enjoying his most productive ever season as a professional footballer, having scored or assisted 12 goals in 35 league games.
The 29-year-old was not directly replaced by the Scotland manager, Alex McLeish, who did however hand a maiden call-up to the Sheffield Wednesday-linked Kilmarnock defender, Stuart Findlay.
Is Bannan the most important player currently at Sheffield Wednesday?
