The Hammers' defensive problems were on show once again on Saturday afternoon, leaking three goals at home in a 4-3 win over Huddersfield Town.
Fabian Balbuena and Winston Reid are both working their way back to fitness, and Manuel Pellegrini also has Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop at his disposal – but seemingly wants another centre back.
La Segunda report that West Ham submitted a €10million (£8.5million) bid for Alaves ace Maripan in January, but it was rejected – and they are expected to return.
It's noted that Barcelona and Real Madrid are keen on Maripan, but West Ham's attempts to swoop in and pip the Spanish giants didn't exactly work.
Maripan, 24, has starred for Alaves since a 2017 move from Universidad Catolica in his native Chile, recording an impressive two goals and two assists from centre back this season.
Boss Pellegrini will be well aware of his compatriot's quality, and may feel that Maripan – a 6ft 4in defender with brute strength and aerial ability – can bolster his defence.
West Ham may well bid again in the summer, but with huge clubs competing for his signature, Pellegrini's attempts to bring the giant defender to East London could be very difficult.
