Aston Villa recorded a deserved 3-0 win over promotion rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Jack Grealish has likened his Aston Villa teammate Glenn Whelan to Chelsea midfielder N’Golot Kante following his side’s 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

Dean Smith’s side moved into the Championship’s top-six with three points against Tony Pulis’s men, with Whelan producing a defensive masterclass in front of the back four.

Anwar El Ghazi opened the scoring in the first half before John McGinn doubled his side’s lead going into the break. Substitute Albert Adomah made sure of the points in the second half as Villa dominated the encounter.

After the match, Grealish sent this simple message about Whelan on his personal Twitter account, with the experienced midfielder producing a Man of the Match display despite not getting on the scoresheet.

In recent weeks, Whelan has been a standout performer for Villa, with recent displays against the likes of Derby County and Birmingham City helping his team fight their way back into the promotion race.

Only a month ago, they were down and out to finish in the top-six, but the return of Grealish has seen them win four games on the bounce and concede only one goal.

As a result, they currently sit in the play-off places, one point behind Boro, who have a game in hand, but Derby and Bristol City, who are below them do have a number of games in hand.
