Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United have lost to Sheffield United at Elland Road.

Leeds United's Jack Harrison rues a missed opportunity during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Sheffield United at Elland Road on March 16, 2019 in Leeds, England.

Leeds United have suffered a blow in their quest to clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Yorkshire rivals United at Elland Road in the Championship.

Chris Basham scored the only goal of the match in the 71st minute to enhance the Blades’ chances of finishing in the top two.

Leeds ended the game with 10 men due to the dismissal of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla in the first minute of injury time.

Noel Whelan was following the match for BBC Radio Leeds, and the former Leeds striker has given his take on the result for the Whites.

Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds at full time on Saturday afternoon (2:33pm, March 16, 2019): “We keep talking about opportunities and taking them, especially in big games like this, when the opportunity comes around, you have got to put it in the back of a net.

"It doesn’t matter about all these stats about possession. I don’t care about that, I really don’t. It’s about putting the ball in the back of the net.”

Meanwhile, former Norwich City and Leeds man Darren Huckerby has suggested on Twitter that he is not pleased to see the Blades win against the Whites.

The defeat to United means that Leeds are now third in the Championship table with 73 points from 38 matches.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are a point behind the Blades, who have moved up to the second spot in the standings.

Norwich are currently at the top of the league table with 75 points from 37 matches.

Leeds will return to action after the two-week international when they take on Millwall at Elland Road in the Championship.

The Whites, though, are very much in the race for automatic promotion from the Championship, and the Elland Road faithful should remain optimistic.
