Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse was one of the unlucky players to miss out on the England squad.
Along with Crystal Palace's Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ward-Prowse is one of the league's most in form players.
He scored goals against Manchester United and Tottenham over the past fortnight.
Former Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier has some sympathy for the midfielder.
He did not buy into Southgate's comments and felt the England boss' excuse for omitting Ward-Prowse was strange.
Strange comment from Gareth considering jwp has played more minutes in PL than most of the midfielders he has picked ♂️ https://t.co/PJyygdne6g— Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) March 13, 2019
The onus is now on Ward-Prowse to respond and back up his good form.
The fact he is even being discussed by Southgate is a step in the right direction.
If he keeps up his form then he will become even more difficult for Ward-Prowse to ignore.
