”Hellboy” — release date, trailers, cast, predictions and more

Hellboy dir. Neil Marshall

Hellboy is back on screens soon in one of the year's most anticipated releases.

Dark Horse Comics' Hellboy is one of the most iconic antiheroes in the history of comic books. Created by Mike Mignola, the character first appeared in 1993 and has since gone on to spawn numerous series and even a Hollywood adaptation. Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy was released in 2004 to critical and audience acclaim; in the days before the MCU, this was one of the boldest and most ambitious comic book adaptation. It still holds up as an entertaining and subversive slice of superhero cinema, but not quite so much as its sequel.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army really amplifies the effective elements of the first film, allowing del Toro to plunge his creative depths. Many adored the film and awaited a sequel for many years. Sadly, when a Hellboy project was finally announced, fans were shocked to realise that it would be a reboot. The second film was left the narrative very open, so it really does seem a shame that they couldn't continue the storyline of Ron Perlman's portrayal. It seemed even more of a shame when the divisive first trailer dropped.

Perlman had been replaced by David Harbour  - of Stranger Things fame - and fans of the del Toro films were quick to compare his performance to Perlman's, denouncing it as a dull take. We had all been told to expect a much darker vision for the franchise, but the initial trailer was scattered with light-hearted quips and tiresome comedy. Expectations drastically changed and it looked like Hellboy could be one of this year's unnecessary outings. Then, the second trailer arrived.

Most agreed the second trailer was far more impressive than the first. It delivered the grit that the crew have been teasing on social media and in interviews for some time, as well as some comedy, of course. Things are hopeful for Hellboy, so in the run up to its release, let's consider what we know:
