Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills has claimed that Everton's Jordan Pickford 'doesn't want to become like' Joe Hart given his recent form for his club.
In recent days, Pickford's role as England's number one goalkeeper has been questioned following his two mistakes during his side's 3-2 defeat to Newcastle last time out.
Despite the erraticness in his game in recent months, Gareth Southgate selected the 25-year-old in his latest Three Lions squad ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifiers, as reported by BBC Sport.
Speaking to Match Centre on Sky Sports News (14/03/2019 at 10:50 am), former Leeds defender Mills stated that Pickford needs to be calmer in between the sticks as he compared him with two-time PL winner, Hart.
"I don't think it is [clear cut that Pickford is England's number one]," Mills told Sky Sports News. "Distribution from the back, he is exceptional at. We have seen that the way Gareth wants to play out from the back, he adds to that.
"I still think he has a little bit of an issue that he doesn't want to become like Joe Hart did. Go back to the Euro's, in the tunnel before that Iceland game. He is so pumped up at times. Now, it's too much adrenaline coursing through his veins.
"I think that's what maybe causes him to make mistakes. As a goalkeeper, you want calmness. Look at some of the great keepers Edwin van der Sar, De Gea at the moment & Buffon. I think sometimes, Jordan gets wrapped up in the occasion. He needs to maybe tone it down a little bit and work on that side of his game."
These last few years have been extremely tough for Hart, who has found himself not only losing his place in the England squad but struggling to earn regular game time in the Premier League.
A couple of seasons ago, he was on loan at Serie A side Torino before returning home and playing for West Ham for a season. He was dropped to the bench midway through that deal.
Since then, he has joined Burnley on a permanent basis. But once again, the experienced keeper has found himself being dropped from the starting XI.
Tom Heaton replaced him in goal for Sean Dyche's side and he will be looking to compete with Pickford for England's number one jersey after being selected in Southgate's squad as one of three keepers.
