Championship challengers Leeds United could reportedly sign Marcelo Bielsa’s former Athletic Bilbao favourite Ander Iturraspe.

If you believe reports in Spain, Ander Iturraspe could be about to reunite with Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United.

A 30-year-old midfielder who has spent his entire career at Athletic Bilbao, AS claims that his contract is due to expire in July and he is not part of the club’s plans going forward. Leeds are apparently interested in offering him a fresh start.

But what would Leeds be getting? For a start, a player Bielsa knows and trusts. Iturraspe worked with the Argentine during his thrilling spell in the Basque country between 2011 and 2013 and become one of the first names on Bielsa’s team sheet, playing in the Europa League and Copa del Rey final.

Fans may be concerned, however, by the fact that Iturraspe appears to be past his best, having started just one La Liga game all season. But Leeds would have a fine player in their ranks if Bielsa can get the best out of him again.

Five years ago, Iturraspe was named in La Liga’s official Team of the Season while he was even given a slot in Spain’s provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup. Five years is a long time but there can be no doubting his calibre.
