Glasgow Rangers had Stefan Marinovic on trial, but he was not handed a deal at Ibrox.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard may well feel better about his decision not to sign Stefan Marinovic when he sees the fan reaction on Twitter to the former Gers trialist’s debut in the Championship.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Marinovic joined Rangers on trial back in January. But the Light Blues did not hand the New Zealand international a contract, and he ended up heading up to Bristol City.

With the Robins enduring something of an injury crisis, Marinovic was handed the opportunity to make his debut on Tuesday. And he may have been optimistic about the chances of keeping a clean sheet with the Championship’s bottom club Ipswich Town coming to Ashton Gate.

However, it seemed to be a debut to forget for the 27-year-old, and his problems started in the first minute. He held onto the ball for too long before his clearance was blocked, sending the ball across the six-yard box. Fortunately for Marinovic, one of the defenders managed to get the ball away before one of the opponents could tap the chance home.

In fairness to Marinovic, he did actually make a couple of good saves in the 1-1 draw. But the reaction on social media certainly suggests that many of Bristol City fans are hoping that he does not feature for the side again anytime soon.

With Rangers perhaps anticipating Wes Foderingham having questions about his future this summer, the Gers may have potentially set their sights on an experienced stopper who could perhaps become Allan McGregor’s understudy if Foderingham does wish to leave at any stage.

But judging by the reaction to Marinovic’s debut, it would appear that Rangers have potentially dodged a bullet on this occasion…
