Casting theories for James Gunn’s upcoming movie are already beginning to surface.

James Gunn’s follow-up to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad has seen several developments recently. After Will Smith announced that he would not be reprising his role as Deadshot, Idris Elba entered talks to replace Smith as the eagle-eyed mercenary. Now, it seems that the movie has acquired a working title.

The news comes from a recent report by Production Weekly (via. CBR), which lists The Suicide Squad alongside a bracketed supplementary name, El Dorado.

Referring to the lost city and golden men of ancient Spanish myth, El Dorado has been associated with fortune across film and popular culture, with some examples being Dreamworks’ The Road to El Dorado and the first Uncharted game. It also bears strong historical connections with human greed, with conquistadores having embarked on gruelling expeditions in search of the Golden City’s rumoured wealth.

This suggests the film could involve a heist of some sort, though given that it’s only a working title and no plot details have been disclosed about the film, there’s currently very little evidence to build a sound theory as to how the title relates to the film.

In addition, the film’s confirmed cast has been recently extended to include lesser-known Gotham baddies, including Ratcatcher, King Shark, Peacemaker and Mister Polka Dot. According to Collider, exterminator-turned-supervillain Ratcatcher (known in the DC comics as Otis Flannegan) will be female in the film, while Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista is rumoured to be in the running for Peacemaker, a former diplomat with a ruthless (and, ironically, violent) dedication to bringing world peace.

Meanwhile, King Shark is an anthropomorphic shark descended from a Shark God, and Mister Polka Dot is defined by his ability to turn the multicoloured dots decorating his costume into a variety of weapons and gadgets, including buzzsaws and a one-man flying saucer.

Though it’s currently unknown how the new squad members will be introduced in the upcoming film, they’re a notoriously zany bunch, which has proven an exciting concept for several DC fans.

There have even been some inspired casting theories floating about, my favourite of which includes Weird Al Yankovic for Polka Dot:

It already sounds like James Gunn is intending to ramp up the zaniness in his film, and given their popularity amongst DC fans, it looks as if that extra zaniness might be very much appreciated when it releases in the near future.

The Suicide Squad – currently under the working title El Dorado – is expected to release on 6 August 2021. According to IMDb, both Margot Robbie and Jared Leto will return as the respective Harley Quinn and The Joker. Idris Elba is in talks to play Deadshot.
