Queens Park Rangers striker Paul Smyth might have struggled in the first half of this season, but his recent international call-up could provide the springboard to break into the first-team.

Smyth is currently on loan at League One Accrington Stanley, and his strong start has seen him earn a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Estonia and Belarus.

The former Linfield man had rarely featured for QPR this term, but manager Steve McClaren has let him earn some valuable game time and it could certainly pay dividends next season.

If Smyth can demonstrate his potential while on international duty later this month, the youngster will surely prove to McClaren there is enough about him to be nurtured into the R's starting line-up.

Smyth will need to keep learning his trade at Stanley but, coupled with a strong showing while away with the Northern Irish side, the Hoops could be welcoming back a different player to Loftus Road in the summer.

After scoring on his international and QPR debut, Smyth now has the perfect opportunity to continue impressing and realising his full potential once more and firmly cementing a place in McClaren's side for next year.
