Is Newcastle's reported £8m Antonio Barreca deal already looking unlikely?

Premier League outfit Newcastle United signed left-back Barreca on loan from Ligue 1 outfit Monaco in the January transfer window.

While Miguel Almiron is already earning standing ovations in English football, Newcastle United’s other January signing has endured a far slower start.

Antonio Barreca moved to Tyneside on loan from Monaco towards the end of the transfer window hoping to kick-start his career after failing to make an impression in France. But after playing four minutes at the end of Newcastle’s defeat to Tottenham, Barreca has been left out of the match day squad for each of The Magpies’ last four Premier League games.

The Chronicle reports that the Italian is fully fit and raring to go. But he has failed to force his way into the starting XI, or even onto the bench, with the industrious Matt Ritchie making the left-wing back position his own in recent months.

The Chronicle have previously suggested that Barreca was Newcastle’s fifth choice left-back target and that may be showing already. The former Torino flyer is already looking like the odd man out.

Gianluca Di Marzio believes that the Tyneside giants have the option to sign Barreca permanently for £8 million next summer if he impresses. But the longer he spends out of the match day 18, the more unlikely this deal becomes.

Maybe Barreca was not the answer to Newcastle’s long-running left-back problem after all.
