Liverpool fans might have been keeping an eye on Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend. After all, Calciomercato reported on Friday that Jurgen Klopp was planning to raid the Bundesliga outfit this summer.

A reunion with his former Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter is apparently on the cards. Klopp was at the helm of the black and yellows when they paid £9 million for Germany’s youngest ever World Cup winner in 2014 (Goal).

But it’s fair to say Ginter didn’t exactly ace his audition just 24 hours later.

The 25-year-old endured his most difficult afternoon of the season when a resurgent Bayern Munich came to town on Saturday. Gladbach have a fine record against the Bundesliga champions but that came to an end in spectacular fashion as they were thrashed 5-1 in front of their own supporters.

That means Dieter Hecking’s side have now conceded 11 goals in their last three home games.

“We made too many mistakes and made it too easy for Bayern. They created a lot of chances after they went 3-1 up and deserved to win in the end,” Ginter told the club’s official website.

Calciomercato claimed that Liverpool had identified Ginter as a replacement for Joel Matip. But the Cameroon international has impressed in the injury-enforced absence of Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez and suggestions that he could be sold seem a little harsh right now.

At least Matip kept a clean sheet against Bayern.
