Everton take on Liverpool at Goodison Park this afternoon.
Everton are back in action this afternoon as they take on bitter rivals Liverpool, hoping to put a dent in their title hopes.
The Toffees returned from a two-week break to beat Cardiff City 3-0 in midweek, giving Marco Silva a much-needed win after a torrid run of results.
Everton’s form collapsed after losing to Liverpool in December, and they will be hoping to exorcise some of those demons with a win over the Reds today.
Silva faces a couple of selection dilemmas though, having seen Phil Jagielka and Morgan Schneiderlin impress in that win at Cardiff.
The duo had combined for just Premier League starts this season before Tuesday night, and gave Silva plenty to think about heading into today’s Merseyside derby.
Both players were perfectly suited for the gritty nature of a trip to face a Neil Warnock side, and Silva may well feel that a local derby is deserving of the same mentality.
Yet he now has Kurt Zouma back from suspension in defence, and he may be better-suited to the movement of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah than 36-year-old Jagielka is.
As for Schneiderlin, his form for Everton has been poor on the whole, and picking him ahead of Toffees loan star Andre Gomes would be a huge call from Silva.
Beating Cardiff is one thing, but vying with Liverpool is another. Having rarely seen either player this season, it would be a huge call to keep them in the side to take on Liverpool, and Silva may simply not dare to start them against such a quality side, even after impressing in midweek.
