West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to comment after Reece Oxford was sent off for Augsburg at the weekend during a humiliating 5-1 defeat for the Bundesliga side.
It has been well-documented how much Oxford has struggled since initially breaking into the Hammers first-team as a 16-year-old who appeared to have the potential to do anything he wanted in the game.
He returned to Germany in January to join Augsburg on loan. Given his age and his previous promise, it did appear that the youngster still had a real opportunity to prove a point to Manuel Pellegrini during his time away ahead of his return in the summer.
Unfortunately for Oxford, the only point that has seemingly been proven so far is that Pellegrini has been right not to promote him to the senior side at the London Stadium, with Augsburg losing all three of the league games that he has started, conceding 12 goals in the process.
Five of those came in the defeat to Freiburg at the weekend. And just as it seemed that the afternoon could get no worse for the 20-year-old, he was sent off in the final moments of the game after a nasty challenge from behind that certainly hinted at the frustration that he was feeling.
There is a sense of resignation amongst some of the West Ham fans on social media regarding Oxford's future following the dismissal. There is little frustration or surprise that Oxford is not having the best time, and many believe that the defender will head for the permanent exit sooner rather than later.
Here is how some of the fans reacted to the red card...
Reece Oxford is living off one decent game against an underprepared and unfit Arsenal side. When in comparison to our other youth players, he was always miles behind them in terms of both ability and attitude. Declan Rice perfect example of this. Oh dear, he's getting sent back at the end of his deal— 父 Dylan 父 (@Dylbec) February 24, 2019
Really hope he can turn this around. He does show quality but needs the right support and the right breaks to get back on track.— Karen Beard (@karenbeardy) February 24, 2019
