Square Enix has had a pretty good 2019 so far thanks to Kingdom Hearts 3 becoming the fastest selling entry in the convoluted franchise. The publisher has also trademarked Parasite Eve in the United Kingdom, along with releasing Final Fantasy 9 on the Nintendo Switch. However, the year is likely to become even better for them as they are supposedly planning to release a MAJOR game during the latter stages of 2019. Could this mysterious game be the Final Fantasy 7 remake or The Avengers Project?
According to Gamerant, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda hinted at a major game release later this year when speaking to investors. Square Enix’s financial reports are predicting a strong third quarter for the company’s 2020 fiscal year, and Matsuda told everyone to look forward to E3.
Now, the obvious candidate is undoubtedly the stuck in development hell Final Fantasy 7 remake. With us having seen nothing of the game since its premature reveal at E3 2015, it’s possible we could see the release of Final Fantasy 7 Episode 1 provided Square Enix are still planning to go ahead with their proposed episodic format.
Another candidate is Crystal Dynamic’s The Avengers Project. We haven’t heard anything about the game since it was first revealed over two years ago, but anything with Marvel’s name is guaranteed to make it rain with money. Therefore, The Avengers Project might be the major release Square Enix are eluding to with their hefty financial predictions.
Although it’s just a guess that Square Enix could be planning to release the Final Fantasy 7 remake Fall of this year, the original PS One classic does have a firm release date for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
In other Square Enix news, Final Fantasy 14’s director has said he wants the 16th instalment to take the series back to its roots.
