Championship outfit Bristol City ran Wolves very close in the FA Cup despite the Premier League side going through thanks to Ivan Cavaleiro’s goal.

Bristol City certainly didn’t make life easy for Wolverhampton Wanderers at Ashton Gate on Sunday afternoon.

Now, Wolves have been a revelation since returning to the Premier League last year, sitting pretty in the top half while outclassing a number of established top flight sides. They scored three goals in away wins at Tottenham and Everton and knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Molineux – and deservedly so.

But it speaks volumes about the character and quality at Lee Johnson’s disposal that his Bristol City side left Wolves fans fearing a cup upset this weekend.

Ivan Cavaleiro scored the only goal of the game, the Portuguese winger scoring his fifth goal of the season from a Matt Doherty cross, but the visitors were forced to hang on during a difficult second half performance that was dominated by the on-song Robins.

Bristol City perhaps should have had a penalty too when a cross struck the arm of Doherty in the second half.

And while this is perhaps no consolation, the fact that Wolves fans have taken to Twitter in their droves to pay tribute to their dogged and determined opponents means there should be plenty of pride in defeat.
