Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that Tottenham Hotspur can win the Champions League this season.

Merson was impressed with Tottenham’s 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their last-16 tie at Wembley Stadium last week.

The Sky Sports pundit was also impressed with the display produced by Belgium international central defender Jan Vertonghen.

Merson wrote in The Daily Star last Friday: “What Tottenham did this week in the Champions League was unreal – and they definitely have the potential to win it now.

"How their game against Borussia Dortmund ended up 3-0 I have no idea, because I watched the first half and thought it could end up 3-0 the other way!

“They were phenomenal in the second half. Jan Vertonghen was absolutely outstanding.”

Champions League winners?

It is hard to see Tottenham collapse in the second leg against Dortmund, and the North London outfit should make their way to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with ease.

Spurs are probably not among the favourites, especially as the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are still in the competition.

Tottenham could get favourable draws further in the competition, and it will indeed be a massive surprise if they go on to win the Champions League.

Spurs are also challenging for the Premier League title this season, and are very much on the toes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
