The Magpies midfielder is closing in on a return to action and trained with the squad on their warm-weather training camp in Spain.
The 26-year-old has endured a difficult campaign this term, starting just eight Premier League games and making 12 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt) while his last game was the 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the FA Cup.
However, a statement on the Magpies' official website announced that Shelvey was able to take part in some of Wednesday morning's session at the squad's warm weather training camp in Spain.
"It is hoped he will continue to edge nearer to a return to action over the next few days - although he won't be involved in Saturday's friendly against CSKA Moscow," said the statement.
The update also gave more information on how the team as a whole was doing, with Paul Dummett, Ki Sung-yueng and Yoshinori Muto now back in contention and January signings Miguel Almiron and Antonio Barreca "settling in more every day".
Later on during Wednesday, the Newcastle Twitter account posted an image of Shelvey in training, captioned by two "call me hand" emojis:
