Sky Sports pundit Neil Mellor was baffled by what Luke Ayling was doing when he gave away a penalty during his side's 2-1 win over Swansea City on Wednesday night at Elland Road.

The home side were leading the encounter 2-0 going into the final few minutes of the match when Ayling fouled Swans attacker Joel Asoro on the edge of the penalty area.

Striker Oli McBurnie stepped up and put away the spot-kick, but Marcelo Bielsa's side held on to secure a valuable three points in their race to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Former Liverpool midfielder Mellor questioned what Ayling was doing in that situation as the senior defender could have cost his team.

"It is one of those situations where you say 'what is the defender doing?'," Mellor told Sky Sports News on 13/02/2019 at 9:30 pm. "It's Luke Ayling, the right full-back. What is he doing making a challenge there? He's not in any kind of position.

"Ayling, he has got the situation under control [at first]. There is contact and straight away [the referee] points to the penalty spot."

Prior to that incident, centre-back Pontus Jansson opened the scoring after 20 minutes on his 28th birthday before Jack Harrison doubled his side's lead 14 minutes later with Ezgjan Alioski supplying his second assist of the game.

As a result of that win, the Whites moved to the top of the Championship table after their near rivals, Norwich City were comfortably beaten by Preston North End away from home.

The Yorkshire outfit are one point ahead of Daniel Farke's men and three points ahead of third-placed Sheffield United, who recorded a narrow win over Tony Pulis' Middlesbrough on the same night.

Leeds will now take a break from action with their next league fixture set to take place on February 23 when they welcome relegation-threatened Bolton to Elland Road.
