Sheffield United bolstered their promotion hopes on Wednesday night with a huge 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough.

The Blades grabbed a second half winner as Richard Stearman scored the only goal of the game, just five minutes before Boro defender Daniel Ayala was sent off.

With Norwich City losing at Preston North End, United have now closed the gap to the automatic promotion spots to just two points after their impressive win.

Substitute Gary Madine had a major impact, but one of the major surprises from the game was Kieran Dowell's performance.

Not that Dowell isn't a talented player; he's a superb playmaker and has a bright future ahead of him. It's more that he was playing in a brand new role on Wednesday night.

The Everton loanee was deployed as a left wing back by Chris Wilder last night, and has earned huge praise from Blades fans on Twitter for his performance.

Supporters have called Dowell 'class' and 'excellent' for his performance in an unfamiliar position, with some admitting they didn't think he'd manage there.

Others called him 'incredible' and 'superb', naming him as man of the match as Everton will no doubt be fascinated at this latest development in Dowell's stint at Bramall Lane.
