Aston Villa's recent poor run of form continued on Wednesday night as they lost 1-0 away at Brentford thanks to a late Neal Maupay goal.

Villa were looking to use their dramatic comeback against Sheffield United on Friday to gain some momentum, and Dean Smith will have been desperate to win last night.

Smith left Brentford for Villa back in October, and was making his first return to Griffin Park since his move – but it didn't exactly go to plan.

Villa missed a golden chance in the first half as Albert Adomah shot wide when through on goal, whilst Tammy Abraham had a penalty appeal turned down after the break.

The winner came late on, as Maupay turned Tommy Elphick before dancing away from Tyrone Mings and shooting into the top corner for a fine winner.

It's now just one win in the last eight Championship games for Villa, and their play-off hopes are fading by the game.

Kortney Hause of Aston Villa questions his team mate during the Sky Bet Championship match between Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa at DW Stadium on January 12, 2019 in Wigan, England.

A number of Villa players flopped in West London, but defender Kortney Hause – a January loan signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers – struggled at left back, and has been slated on Twitter.

Fans suggested that Hause should never play for Villa again, questioning just who on earth scouted him whilst branding him 'shocking', 'absolutely awful' and 'playing in slow motion'.
