Spurs play host to Dortmund at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Per Mertesacker the Arsenal Academy Director looks on before the match between Arsenal U18 and West Bromwich Albion U18 at Meadow Park on February 9, 2019 in Borehamwood, England.

Per Mertesacker has told German magazine Kicker that he believes Borussia Dortmund are favourites to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League on Wednesday night - and commented on Fernando Llorente.

Spurs will be looking to go one better than last season by knocking Dortmund out at the last 16 stage, after losing over two legs to Italian champions Juventus last season.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are without a number of key players, with Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Ben Davies all out injured. There is a race against time for Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Erik Lamela to be fit.

With Kane sidelined, Llorente is expected to start once again and former Arsenal defender Mertesacker has discussed the Spanish striker as well as claiming the winter break in German football makes Dortmund the favourites.

"Fernando Llorente, the replacement of injured Harry Kane at Tottenham, is a massive striker," Mertesacker said. "I've experienced what it's like when the most intense month is December, when your body actually has to shut down to be fit for the crucial games in April, May."

"That's why the English record in the last 16 is so weak, the German clubs have to exploit that factor and keep up the pace, and they should not be intimidated."

Tottenham faced Dortmund twice in the 2017-18 campaign during the Champions League group stage, winning 3-1 at Wembley and 2-1 at the Westfalenstadion.

But manager Lucien Favre has got his side playing a different style of football that is proving effective. They sit five points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the table, with Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Jadon Sancho all on fire.
