Craig Dawson had the chance to make a real statement on Tuesday night as West Bromwich Albion hosted Nottingham Forest.
Starting in his favoured centre-back position, and without Ahmed Hegazi alongside him, Dawson will have been hoping to prove himself as the best defender available to manager Darren Moore.
But did he make the right impression? Not exactly.
Dawson has spent much of his West Brom career playing at right-back and he looked like a square peg in a round hole in the centre when Forest came to The Hawthorns.
It was his misplaced pass that paved the way for Lewis Grabban’s strike, while he struggled to deal with the pace and movement of Forest’s attackers throughout the thrilling 2-2 draw.
On Tuesday night’s evidence, reports from The Express and Star that West Brom refused to sell Dawson in the summer after demanding an eye-watering £20 million look remarkable. Dawson barely looked like a £2 million defender against Martin O’Neill’s Nottingham Forest.
As the West Brom fans have pointed out, his weaknesses were brutally exposed in midweek.
Craig Dawson must be one of the most overrated players of recent years. At best, he ‘did a job’ in PL. Yet at this lower level, in his ‘best’ position, he’s really been found out. Dreadful defender. #wba— Steve (@pennwba) February 13, 2019
Evans made him look good playing at CB and Pulis made him look good playing 7 in defence let's be honest!— Ian Clifton (@ianclifton84) February 13, 2019
I think our defence (central) in possession is going to cost us getting back up. The amount of goals they have gifted teams is alarming and the stubbornness of Jones & Moore to keep doing it is beyond belief. Dawson deffo missed Hagazi #WBA— DARREN JAMES (@DarrenWBA74) February 13, 2019
Harper once again showing the strength and composure of a senior pro at such a tender age, let’s hope his contract negotiations don’t drag on.— HalfordsLaneTweets (@halfords_lane) February 12, 2019
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Dawson is not a reliable centre half, these goals we give away will eventually cost us #WBA
Remember when people were convinced Craig Dawson was good enough for England... #wba— Gunga (@GungaWBA) February 12, 2019
Dawson was horrendous tonight without Hegazi alongside him #WBA— CH (@ChrisAlbion01) February 12, 2019
Dawson has been absolutely woeful tonight. Awful defending from the off. #wba— Richard Bates (@richard_bates) February 12, 2019
