This year's Academy Awards are set for a big shake up

The 2019 Academy Awards will be the first in history to present several awards during commercial breaks in the ceremony.

The four award categories that will be cut from the live broadcast are, according to the Hollywood Reporter, cinematography, film editing, live-action short as well as hair styling and makeup.

It's a break from tradition for the Academy Awards which have until now, always shown each award's presentation.

In similar fashion to the BAFTAs, the presentation and acceptance speeches for the cut awards will be broadcast later in the programme.

The decision to present certain awards during the ceremony's plentiful ad breaks was made to reduce the run-time of the ceremony to three hours.

There is no news yet on whether viewers in the UK, watching the Oscars on Sky Cinema, will be able to watch the aforementioned awards as Sky's ad breaks aren't as frequent as the US broadcast.

2019 will also be the first Academy Awards in over three decades not to feature a host. For the last two years, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has hosted the ceremony but the 91st Oscars ceremony will have to go without.
