No, this is not a Nirvana biopic.
Teen Spirit, the directorial debut of Max Minghella (The Handmaid's Tale), is instead the story of Violet Valenski (Elle Fanning), a shy girl who dreams of fame as a distraction from her family life. With the help of a mentor, she enters a singing competition, and finds she has the required talent to succeed.
Also starring Rebecca Hall, the film features music from the likes of Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen and Ariana Grande, with some original songs thrown in for good measure. From the premise and trailer alone, the film doesn't look to be offering anything fresh to a well-worn template, whilst the Europop music makes you wonder if the film should've come out 20 years earlier.
The shots of Fanning singing don't really convince either, and it does admittedly look a tad unpolished. Teen Spirit premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, and has attained lukewarm reviews thus far. The film is due to be released on April 5 in the US, but it doesn't have a projected release for the UK; given that a portion of the film is set in Britain, one is pretty sure it will gain a release on these shores.
