Newcastle United have loaned out Jacob Murphy to West Bromwich Albion until the end of the season.
Rafael Benitez has told the Northern Echo that he decided to let Jacob Murphy leave Newcastle United to join West Bromwich Albion, as he now feels comfortable with utilising Matt Ritchie as a winger again.
Ritchie had often been asked to fill in at left-back for Newcastle in recent weeks, but the arrival of Antonio Barreca meant that the Magpies now have cover in that area.
Ritchie is now expected to move back into midfield, and that left Murphy’s chances of breaking into Newcastle’s team looking slim.
And Benitez said: “We decided to let Murphy go on loan because of that.
“With Barreca, we have another chance to play with a left wing-back, which means that Ritchie can play as a winger.
“Maybe he can continue as a wing-back if we need him to, but at least we have more options and that is always good because it gives us more competition.”
Murphy has already made his West Brom debut, after joining from Newcastle, but he failed to impress.
West Brom were beaten 3-2 by Middlesbrough at the weekend, with Murphy only having a limited impact.
The hope for Newcastle is that Murphy will have a productive spell at the Hawthorns, before returning an improving player next season.
Murphy could feature again for Darren Moore’s side at the weekend, when they take on Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium.
