Could Derby County be about to secure a signing that will leave East Midland rivals Nottingham Forest red-faced?

It is no secret that Frank Lampard was frustrated by Derby’s failure to bring a new centre-back to Pride Park during the January transfer window with Matthew Pennington one of a number of players who slipped through their grasp.

But it seems that Derby are thinking outside the box, and the transfer window, with TEAMtalk claiming that The Rams are set to sign Efe Ambrose on a free transfer.

Experienced and a proven winner from his time with Celtic, the 30-year-old will provide some much-needed competition for Richard Keogh and Fikayo Tomori in Lampard’s backline.

And reports of Derby’s interest comes exactly a week after the Daily Record (31 January, 10.54am) reported that Nottingham Forest were keen to bring the Nigerian international to the City Ground.

Now, Martin O’Neill was handed both Molla Wague and Alexander Milosevic but it is uncertain how they will adapt to life in Britain after arriving from Italy and Sweden respectively.

If Ambrose joins Derby and helps The Rams into the play-offs, or perhaps even the Premier League, Nottingham Forest could be left wondering what might have been. The prospect of Ambrose leading their bitter rivals to promotion doesn’t bare thinking about.
