HITC Sport understands Southampton plan to keep Championship target Sam Gallagher beyond the close of the transfer window.

Sam Gallagher in action for Southampton against Derby

Southampton have ruled out loaning out Sam Gallagher before the close of the transfer window after fielding a number of enquiries for the striker, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

The likes of Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Hull and Millwall have expressed an interest in taking Gallagher on loan for the second half of the season as they look to bolster their attacking options.

However, Southampton have rebuffed all overtures for Gallagher as they want him to stay around the first-team at St Mary’s.

Gallagher has found first-team opportunities limited so far this season, making just three substitute appearances this term.

However, two of those substitute outings have come under new Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl this month and the Austrian is thought to have been impressed by Gallagher since replacing Mark Hughes on the South Coast.

Southampton want to keep Gallagher at St Mary’s as they do not want to leave themselves short of attacking options having already allowed Manolo Gabbiadini leave to return to Italy, while Charlie Austin could also leave before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
