Newcastle United sent social media into a frenzy after they earned an excellent 2-1 win over Premier League champions Manchester City - and Toon legend and ex-manager Alan Shearer, as well as former players Peter Lovenkrands and Peter Ramage reacted on Twitter.

Newcastle came from behind to beat Pep Guardiola's side despite being massive underdogs going into the match. Sergio Aguero had given Newcastle the lead in just 24 seconds.

But a second-half equaliser from Salomon Rondon saw The Toon equalise and with City struggling to create anything, Newcastle capitalised. A mistake from Fernandinho saw Matt Ritchie slam home a penalty from 12 yards.

It was enough to win the match, and the victory delighted fans and players alike on Twitter after the match. Former stars Shearer, Lovenkrands and Ramage were the pick of ex-players reacting to the win on Twitter.

The victory was Newcastle's only second win in their last seven league games, but it does push Rafa Benitez's side as high as 14th place in the league.

The club are expected to complete three signings before Thursday's deadline. BBC Sport claim The Toon are to smash their club-record transfer fee for Miguel Almiron, while the Telegraph claim Antonio Barreca and Andreas Samaris will join on loan.
