Liverpool legend Phil Thompson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports Premier League last Saturday afternoon (12:50pm, January 26, 2018) that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks should now start adding assists and goals to his game.

The former Liverpool and England international central defender believes that the 22-year-old Tottenham midfielder needs to play the ball more forward from now on.

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier said on the same show that Winks looks a very good player when he keeps it simple, and suggested that the England international midfielder struggles when he has to do the difficult things.

Thompson said about Winks on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports Premier League last Saturday afternoon (12:51pm, January 26, 2018): “You have to start now assists. You have to start passing the ball forward, and I don’t just mean around the corner, getting it back. That’s not playing it forward.

“I mean, now start to pick 15, 20-yard balls though the middle, hurting people, hurting people with your passing. That’s what he has to do. Once you have got that, then you have to start adding goals to it.”

Le Tissier said about Winks on Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports Premier League last Saturday afternoon (12:49pm, January 26, 2018): "A lot of the time his passing is sideways and quite safe, and when it comes to do the difficult things, when he tries to do the difficult things, I think that’s when he struggles a bit. He keeps it nice and safe and simple, he looks a very good player."

Improving and developing

Winks is only 22 years of age, and the Tottenham and England international midfielder can certainly improve in the coming years.

The youngster scored the winner in Spurs2-1 victory over Fulham away from home at Craven Cottage in London in the Premier League on January 20.

The 22-year-old needs to build on that, and should try to create more chances and perhaps even take shots from distance if the opportunity presents itself.

According to WhoScored, Winks has scored one goal in 1149 minutes of Premier League football for Spurs so far this season, while during the 2017-18 campaign, the midfielder did not score any in 772 minutes of league football.
