Black Panther, the hit-blockbuster from Marvel, has won the top award at the annual SAG Awards, giving it a glimmer of hope at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Taking home the Best Ensemble award, Ryan Coogler’s superhero film beat Crazy Rich Asians, A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman and Bohemian Rhapsody, the latter three all being fellow Best Picture nominees for the Oscars.

Bohemian Rhapsody did win one award on the night, with Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury gaining him the Best Actor award, meaning he now edges ahead of Christian Bale (Vice) in the race.

Vice also saw another loss in the Supporting Actress category, with Amy Adams failing to capitalise on Regina King’s (If Beale Street Could Talk) omission, with Emily Blunt taking home the award for her role in A Quiet Place. Despite missing out on nominations at SAG and BAFTA, King remains the favourite for the Oscar, with Blunt not being nominated there and Adams and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) not making their mark.

The other supporting category seems like a lock now, with Mahershala Ali continuing his dominant streak for Green Book. Glenn Close is also in a good position for the Oscar after winning Best Actress for The Wife, triumphing over Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite).
