King's future at the King Power Stadium appears to be in some doubt with Claude Puel leaving the 30-year-old out of his Premier League squad.
Sky Sports reports that several second tier clubs are interested in signing King on loan this month, and Forest are one of those battling for his signature as Martin O'Neill looks to make his second signing since arriving at City Ground.
O'Neill has already signed King's former teammate Yohan Benalouane on a permanent deal, and he appears to be hoping to improve the spine of his side further with the addition of the Wales international, who has made the best part of 400 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions.
It is interesting that Forest are looking at a central midfielder, as they arguably have a strong group of options in the middle of the park. But, of course, O'Neill may have other ideas about the squad that Aitor Karanka has left him.
And King - who earns £40,000-a-week, according to Spotrac - is a player who featured prominently as Leicester went from League One in 2009 to lifting the Premier League trophy seven years later, so his promotion experience could make him an excellent addition to Forest's squad.
