British retail tycoon Mike Ashley, owner of Sports Direct, House of Fraser and Premier League club Newcastle United, is one of a “number of parties” to have made a bid to accountancy firm KPMG for music and entertainment retailer HMV, which is currently in administration, according to reports.

Sky News reported that Ashley was “one of a handful of parties to lodge formal offers with KPMG ahead of a deadline on 15 January” and that a source close to him said he was “serious” about purchasing it to add to his retail portfolio.
