Florian Lejeune was lauded by the Newcastle United supporters at the weekend.

A number of Newcastle fans are adamant that Florian Lejeune may be the best centre-back the Magpies have had in years after watching his performance in the win against Cardiff on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez’s side have eased some of their relegation fears with a stunning 3-0 victory at St James’ Park. But while Fabian Schar stole many of the headlines with his two goals, it was his centre-back partner that took a lot of the plaudits.

Lejeune was making only his second Premier League appearance of the season after recently returning from injury. But he is showing absolutely no sign of rustiness as he was superb against the Bluebirds.

The 27-year-old – who earns £38,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – made a number of clearances and seemed to win everything in the air, while also producing more accurate passes than anyone else that stepped foot on the pitch, with Whoscored showing he found a teammate 43 times.

His closest rival, Salomon Rondon, made 10 fewer accurate passes.

And that has prompted a number of fans to suggest that Lejeune could be the club’s best defender in a long time, with many convinced that his return is going to be a key factor in ensuring that they move themselves away from the relegation scrap.

Here is how some of the fans reacted to the Frenchman’s performance…
