Leeds are reportedly interested in midfielder Abeid.

Magazine France Football have claimed Leeds United are interested in signing Dijon FCO midfielder Mehdi Abeid this month – and Leeds fans are keen to see a deal struck for the Ligue 1 star.

Abeid is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites, who are said to be looking to add more depth to their squad after an injury-plagued first half to the season.

Leeds could be after a central midfielder that can play in the number 10 role. Samu Saiz returned to his home country on a loan-to-buy deal with La Liga side Getafe, in a move that is expected to become permanent.

Meanwhile, Lewis Baker’s loan spell at Elland Road has been cancelled by Chelsea due to a lack of game time and he has since joined Championship strugglers Reading.

A five-time Algeria international, Abeid has been in excellent form or Dijon this season, scoring three goals in 16 French top-tier outings. Dijon are struggling to avoid the drop, sitting in 18th with just 17 points from 19 games.

Abeid has an interesting CV. Starting his career at French side RC Lens, Newcastle signed him in 2011 and he eventually made 21 senior appearances for the Toon. He went on loan to Scottish Premiership side St. Johnstone in 2013.

Then in 2015, he joined Greek giants Panathinaikos before completing a permanent move. He clocked up 72 appearances, scoring 14 goals and creating six more, helping them win the Greek Cup before joining Dijon in the summer of 2016.

Leeds fans reacted to the rumours that the Whites are interested in signing Abeid, with a pre-contract deal available as overseas clubs can sign Ligue 1 players in the final six months of their contract. The majority have urged a deal to get done.
