Yes, Lazar Markovic is still a Liverpool player. For how much longer, however, remains to be seen.
A £20 million signing in 2014, the so-called ‘Balkan Messi’ arrived at Anfield with a big reputation after helping Benfica reach the Europa League final with his rapid dribbling skills drawing comparisons to a certain Argentine attacker.
But to say Markovic’s spell on Merseyside has been underwhelming would be an understatement.
It speaks volumes that the 24-year-old has not made a Premier League appearance since Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers three-and-a-half years ago with Markovic enjoying spells on loan at Hull City, Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht in that time.
This is, after all, their last chance to recoup some money for the big-money flop, although it is understood that Liverpool would only demand a nominal fee.
Markovic is reported to be earning a hefty £50,000 a week and has been training with Liverpool’s U23 side since he rejected the chance to join Anderlecht on a permanent basis last summer.
