Celtic have been linked with Chancel Mbemba.

Celtic have been linked with a move for DR Congo defender Chancel Mbemba.

The Scottish Sun report Mbemba could be offered to Celtic as part of a swap deal with Porto for midfielder Olivier Ntcham.

Mbemba had a spell at Newcastle United and showed on the pitch when he was fit that he was capable of performing well.

The 24-year-old made 59 appearances in total for the Toon.

He would be a solid if unspectacular addition for Celtic, helping address a defence which could be thin on quality players come next season, with Dedryck Boyata set to depart and Filip Benkovic’s loan to expire.

The big problem for Mbemba could come off the pitch.

His boss at Newcastle United, Rafa Benitez, said that Mbemba failed to settle in the UK.

Benitez told The Chronicle: “We are talking about a player where we know he has quality if we analyse him technically.

“After, you have to settle down in the team, the city and the country.”

Celtic would do all they can to help Mbemba, but if he struggled after three years at Newcastle to feel at home, then it suggests the defender may have trouble too in Glasgow.
