Dion Dublin has honestly stated that Aston Villa have had 'a bit of a stinker of late' as they continue to struggle in their race for promotion in the Championship.

Dean Smith's side were beaten 3-0 at Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon, with the away side failing to record a shot on target against the recently promoted club.

Following the defeat at the DW Stadium, former Villa striker Dublin offered his thoughts on the club's current situation as they continue to fall down the Championship table.

"Having been in teams that have played in the playoffs, you have to be consistent and keep picking up points," Dublin told BBC's Final Score programme on 12/01/2019 at 5:25 pm.

"Villa have had a bit of a stinker at late, conceding for fun and cannot get anybody to score goals for them. Upsetting. They need to be in the playoffs."

In their previous seven league encounters, Villa have picked up only one win and suffered two defeats, which leaves them five points outside of the playoff places.

Under Steve Bruce and now Smith, the Midlands outfit have conceded 43 goals from their 27 league encounters this season - to put that into perspective, they only shipped 42 goals during the previous campaign.

Villa have struggled defensively this season, with captain James Chester having five different partners at the heart of the club's defence this season, including the recently recruited Kortney Hause.

Following that defeat against Wigan, Smith will be looking for a response from his Villa players when they host in-form Hull City on home soil next Saturday - Nigel Adkin's side have won six matches on the bounce.
