It's been a bit of a disappointing January both on and off the field for Leeds United.
Marcelo Bielsa's side kicked off the month with a demoralising 4-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest, before then bowing out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 loss at QPR.
Off the pitch things haven't been that much more fruitful, with Leeds missing out on two reported targets: Rajiv van La Parra admitted to Voetbal Elf that he snubbed the Whites to join Middlesbrough on loan, while Ibai Gomez, reported by Goal.com to have interested the Elland Road side, joined Athletic Bilbao earlier this week.
And is one Scottish wonderkid about to make it a hat-trick of missed targets?
The report claims that the Saints have also agreed that fee with the Northern club and it looks like it might be up to the player to choose who he wants: United or Southampton.
McKinstry has even visited the Yorkshire club's Thorp Arch training facilities, but now the Premier League side are trying to convince him to move to the South Coast.
In the short term it's not as disappointing as missing Van la Parra or Gomez, both of whom could've helped United reach the Premier League this season, but if McKinstry goes on to fulfill his potential then it'll be seen as a big, big miss for Leeds.
