Few would have been surprised to see Aitor Karanka handed his P45 by Nottingham Forest on Friday morning.
The manager has been under pressure for some time and, despite beating Leeds United 4-2 in their most recent Championship game, it appeared that Karanka was on borrowed time with his relationship with the Forest hierarchy understood to have soured of late.
And it seems that the East Midland club have been planning for the Spaniard’s departure for some time.
On Boxing Day, the Mail reported that Forest had already identified Slavisa Jokanovic as their top target should Karanka bite the bullet.
Three weeks later, Jokanovic is still a free man. And, interestingly, he allegedly rejected one of Forest’s fellow Championship clubs just days ago.
Whether this is good or bad news for Nottingham Forest remains to be seen. Jokanovic was sacked by Fulham as recently as November and it remains to be seen whether he is willing to drop down to the Championship again after a taste of life in the Premier League.
