The artist - referred to professionally as ZAYN - has had quite the career. The English singer-songwriter found fame with boyband One Direction in the wake of their time as X-Factor frontrunners. The group finished third in the competition but went on to become a global phenomenon over the course of five studio albums. Malik left the band in 2015, subsequently pursuing a career crafting an alternative style of music.
Rather than continue pedalling pure pop music, the musician went ahead and signed to RCA records, releasing his debut solo record Mind of Mine in 2016, which saw Malik break sales and streaming records under his own banner, as well as securing him numerous awards accolades.
His second studio album, Icarus Falls, was released 14 December 2018 and favours styles of R&B. It’s clear that Malik has been making strenuous efforts to distance his current music from that of his past, and with this ambitious project, he may have been successful. Here is the music video for his latest single “Satisfaction”:
The record has been well received critically and by fans, who have witnessed the growth of ZAYN as an artist over the years. The singer has a terrific voice, and the track really highlights this above anything else. The music video itself was directed by Bouha Kazmi and features some interesting visuals depicting the destruction of nature and a narrative dealing with themes of loss, damage and grief. Shots displaying the destruction of nature are strikingly captured, and it’s definitely the most visually stunning video of ZAYN’s career so far. The departing shot of a flower blossoming from a man’s chest, bursting with life, is a gorgeous note to leave on, and pretty much encapsulates the singer’s progression; breaking away from a body to soar, reaching new heights.
