Premier League side Everton are interested in signing Schalke 04 wonderkid Gorkem Can, according to a report.

Turkish Football claim that the Toffees are one of several sides scouting the 18-year-old centre-back, who has been under the stewardship of the highly acclaimed coach Norbert Elgert.

Former Bundesliga player Elgert has been in charge of Schalke’s U-19’s since the late ’90s and has produced a number of high-quality players from World Cup winners, Manuel Nuer and Mesut Ozil to Premier League winner Leroy Sane.

It is said that Can is one of the latest players to emerge from the prolific youth system as the highly-rated player has already started turning heads.

German-born Can is yet to make an appearance for the senior team, but he has played for the club’s U-17’s and U-19’s on a number of occasions as well as representing the younger age groups for his national side.

The versatile player has played at the heart of Schalke’s U-19 defence this season and switched to left-back on three occasions.

Over the course of this campaign, Can has played 20 games in all competitions across the younger age groups, scoring an impressive four goals from defence and helping his side secure four clean sheets.

The report does state that Can was originally a number 10 but the rising star was converted into a centre-back by his coach Elgert as the left-footed player possess high technical ability.
